PhD opportunity: Pushing the limits of eDNA in deep-sea environments

We’re looking for a motivated student to join the The University of Western Australia OceanOmics Centre (UWA Oceans Institute) for a PhD focused on pushing the limits of eDNA in deep-sea environments. This project will identify and fill critical gaps in reference genomic data, then use these insights to develop and validate #deepsea specific metabarcoding primers. These tools will be applied across multiple oceanic regions to reveal how improved taxonomic resolution reshapes our understanding of deep-sea biodiversity, biogeography, and ecosystem structure.

You’ll work at the interface of molecular #ecology, #eDNA, and bioinformatics to improve our understanding of life in the planet’s most unexplored habitats.

This position comes with a top-up scholarship bringing total support to $50,000 per year- ideal for an exceptional candidate ready to take on a globally relevant research challenge.

Looking for candidates with a background in marine ecology, #genomics, or eDNA, who are keen to learn and take on a big, exciting challenge. To apply or receive more info, email myself (georgia.nester@uwa.edu.au) or Shannon Corrigan (shannon.corrigan@uwa.edu.au).

📍 Perth, Australia (international candidates welcome)
